How to buy a good sofa

Your sofa seats your guests when you do some entertaining at home. Your sofa will seat your family as they gather in front of the TV set or the gaming console. Even if you have set yourself into thinking that your sofa is only a temporary piece that you would keep for only a few years, you will certainly end up having it for around ten or more years before you even know it.

Since there is no such thing as a transitional sofa, you might as well furnish the best sofa that your money can buy when you are in the market for a good sofa. However, just how should you go about buying a good sofa? Here are a few pointers.

1. Choose a sofa that complements the style of the room where it will be placed. Before you go shopping for your new sofa, you have to take a good look of the room where you would be putting your sofa and consider the style in which the room was done. One of the guidelines in interior designs is that all the elements of a room must complement each other and create an overall look that is cohesive and harmonious. So, whatever sofa you are going to buy should help create that look of harmony and cohesiveness in the room.

2. Get a sofa that is proportionate to the size of the room. The scale of the room is another important factor that you should consider when you are buying a sofa. The size of your new sofa should be proportionate to the room you would be putting it in. Big sofas will crowd a small room, while small sofas will be drowned in a big room.

Also consider the use that your sofa would have in the room. If it is just for seating people, then there would be no problem for you to get a sofa that is a bit narrow between the arms. However, you may want to get a bit more space between the arms if you intend to lie on that sofa every once in a while.

3. Go for an armless sofa. If the room wherein you would be putting your sofa is a little too small and you need to make this room appear bigger than it really is, the solution you need to look at is the armless sofa. The armless sofa can create the illusion of added width in a room

4. Check out the cushioning of the sofa and determine how many it can seat. One basic truth about sofas is that no one wants to sit on the crack between two cushions simply because it is not a comfortable spot to rest one’s bum on. If you want your sofa to seat as many people as it can in reasonable comfort, you can choose a sofa with a single cushion.

Speaking of comfort, you would want your sofa to have a depth that is just perfect for you. A sofa with a good depth would have ample space between its edge and the back of your knees when you sit on it.

5. Keep in mind who would be using your sofa when considering fabric and patterns. Your sofa would need to be ready to withstand whatever use and abuse it will get from its expected users. So, when you are shopping for your sofa, consider who will be using it.

A sofa done in just one solid color is always nice to look at. However, stains and dirt become readily apparent on them. On the other hand, a sofa with patterned upholstery will work well in hiding stains and dirt. If you have kids at home or if you live with pets indoors, a patterned sofa would fit you more.

Likewise, if you have kids or pets at home, the fabric of your sofa should be something that is easy to clean and not too delicate. Otherwise, it would be too much of a chore to get dirt and stains cleaned up. Also, if the fabric is too delicate, you may run a bill on reupholstering your sofa. If you want a low-maintenance sofa, go ahead and get something done in leather.

Your sofa is an important piece of furniture that will stay with you for a very long time. When you go out to buy a sofa for any room in your house, take the time and effort to make a careful decision on what kind of sofa you are going to bring back home. Otherwise, you will have to live with the product of your mistake for a very long time.

Leather sofa care

You would think that all leather sofas would be created soft. You know the type of leather sofa you sink right into when you sit down. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Some of these solutions come from regular household items and some are products you can buy.

Home Remedies

* Saddle Soap is an excellent way to soften tough leather. This leather conditioner has been around for hundreds of years when it was used by cowboys to keep saddles and other horse tack in good shape. It may not be the best thing for a leather sofa though.

* Vaseline is something everyone has laying around the house and it's cheap. Dab a soft clean cloth into the gel and then work it into the leather sofa in small amounts until it feels dry. You will want to wipe the sofa with a dry cloth to remove any excess grease but the leather will absorb most of it. Try this on a small area first before doing the whole couch.

* Shaving cream has been a good standby for many people. You want to use shaving cream on a clean damp cloth, working it into the leather. You will be amazed at how quickly this softens your sofa.

* Mink Oil is a favorite for many people. You can find Mink Oil at just about any leather shop and is not very expensive.

* Lanolin is another natural ingredient that will work.

* A mixture of 500 g bag balm, also called milk salve and 100 ml of glycerin also makes a great home remedy if you have a lot of area to cover and a small budget to work with.

* In all cases mentioned above, try it in an inconspicuous area first before doing the entire surface. Wait to see how well it soaks into the leather.

Commercial Products

* Leather CPR Cleaner and Conditioner is made with 100% natural ingredients and in addition to softening, Leather CPR also helps remove dirt, grime, and sweat. In fact, this conditioner will also help cover small scratches on your leather sofa!

* Liquid NIKWAX is also a great option for removing dirt and softening your leather sofa. All you need to do is gently apply it with a clean, dry cloth.

..nikwax-usa. com

* Leather Vital is a product made in Canada that has an amazing ability to soften even the stiffest leather sofas. It deeply penetrates, filling in dry cracks and actually nourishing the leather.

What should i ask before deciding on a home plan

If you decide to get a home plan, there are certain questions you need to ask. Make sure that everything is clear before you make your purchase.

You should know all of the following before deciding on a home plan:

1. Do the plans or blueprints include the electrical and the plumbing? – The rough plumbing should be included in the plans. It should have a detailed presentation of the pipes and where they come into the house. The electrical lightings and outlets should be included.

2. How will I customize my plans? If you want to customize your plans, you can buy a reproducible master copy printed on erasable paper. This erasable paper will allow you to make changes. You can ask your local draftsman or engineer to make changes for the plan and layout. This will also allow you to reproduce copies of the plan after the changes have been made. Customizing your plan is often necessary to make your plan perfect for your individual tastes.

3. What are the things included in the blueprints? – Of course a blueprint should be well detailed. It should include:

a. Foundation plan – a foundation plan shows how the foundations are built. This is where the thickness of the foundation walls are emphasized including the spacing, floor joint sizes, column locations, furnace, water and heater locations, plumbing, windows, doors and other miscellaneous details that are related to the basement and foundation.

b. Coversheet – a coversheet is a representation of the house when it is built. A coversheet may not be compulsory for a home plan but it would be better if it is presented. The purpose of a coversheet is to give the owner a perspective of how the home will look after it has been constructed. This may contain the front, top, rear and side view of the house. This is important so that the owner can give suggestions.

c. Floor plans - the floor plans indicate the construction and layout of each part or floor of the house. The ones naturally included are wall sizes, room dimensions, plumbing and electrical locations, doors, windows, flooring and the structural information and the special conditions related to the floor plan.

d. Elevations - this is a representation of the exterior of the house, its size, shape of the doors and windows, size of the trim, the dimensions and the height, the depth of the foundation, shingle types and moldings, replacement of materials, the pitch of the roof, and the gutters and downspouts.

4. Are the blueprints signed and approved by the architect? – This is very important to ensure that an architect has reviewed the blueprint and it has passed all the requirements of a home plan. You can also ask about the background of the architect who signed your home plan.

These questions are essential in choosing a home plan. Take the time to get the answers, this is your home after all.

Building a room addition - first develop a room addition plan

Building a Room Addition can be one of the best investments you can make in your home. Building a room addition, such as a family room addition, or bonus room can add wonderful new living space to your home. However, prior to starting a room addition, a homeowner should first formulate a room addition plan. There are several key factors that should be considered prior to breaking ground.

Developing a room addition plan should include both interior and exterior considerations. With many room addition projects a homeowner can draw up the basic room addition plans, including the floor layout and the physical exterior shape and size of the addition. However, if the roof lines and/or foundation footprints on the existing home or the new room addition are complex, an architect may be required. An architect may also be required to ensure that the finished room addition aesthetically melds well into the existing home. This is a key factor for resale value. If a room addition appears as an afterthought to the home it will be aesthetically unappealing to the neighborhood and to someday prospective home buyers.

When planning a room addition, the permit / inspection process will typically include an overall building permit, as well as electric, plumbing, and insulation permits. In order to complete the building permit process you will need drawings or sketches of the room addition. Besides overall sketches of the room addition with overall dimensions, the drawings will also need to include cross-sectional views showing the framing type and physical sizes of floor joists, roof rafters, and wall framing construction. You will also need a bill of materials and a cost estimate for the construction. The building inspector will use this information to determine if the construction will meet all construction and safety codes. The building inspector also uses the Bill of Material and cost information to assess the amount of the permit cost.

During the building of the room addition, inspections should be completed after the:

· Foundation is poured

· Rough framing completed

· Rough Electric completed

· Rough Plumbing completed

· Insulation completed

· Final Inspection / Occupancy Permit (Electric/Plumbing are complete)

Whether hiring a general contractor or planning to be a do it yourself carpenter and general contractor a budget and time table should be developed prior to starting the room. Not only is it necessary in the permitting process, it will help in identifying long lead items and provide the information necessary for financing the project if required. In addition, if acting as your own general contractor creating the time table will help assist you in determining need dates for sub contractors.

With room addition building plans and permits secured, as well as a solid Bill of materials and a timetable completed, a homeowner can begin the room addition project with a high likelihood of a smooth and successful home building project.

For more help on building a room addition, see HomeAdditionPlus. com's Room Addition Bid sheet. The Room Addition Bid Sheet will help ensure that your room addition project goes smoothly and is completed on time and budget.

The plus sides of remodeling your kitchen

Are you one the many homeowners in America who would like to do a little bit of remodeling? When it comes to remodeling, one of the rooms most often remodeled is the kitchen.

One of the reasons for that is because there are a number of advantages to having a kitchen remodeled. While there are a number of benefits to kitchen remodeling, there are also a number of disadvantages. These disadvantages are often referred to cons. If you were thinking about remodeling your kitchen, you may be wondering what the main cons of kitchen remodeling are.

Perhaps, the biggest con of remodeling your kitchen is the fact that it costs money. The amount of money needed will depend on how much of your kitchen you plan on remodeling, as well as the supplies and materials that you need or want to purchase. If you make the decision to only replace your kitchen countertops, you will find that it is easier to afford that remodeling project than it is a larger one, such as project that requires the replacement of countertops, cabinets, wall panels, lighting, and floor tiles. While it is always possible to remodel your kitchen on a budget, you may find it a little bit difficult to do. The cost will be relatively high regardless of whether you do your own kitchen remodeling or if you hire a professional.

In addition to the cost of remodeling your kitchen, you will also find that there are a number of other cons or disadvantages. One of those cons is the time that it takes to remodel your kitchen. Regardless of how much of your kitchen you choose to remodel, you will find that it is still time consuming, especially if you do not have any prior remodeling experience. If you have time, this kitchen remodeling con may not even apply to you. However, if you are pressed for time or are tying to remodel your kitchen on the side, you may find it difficult to get it all done in a reasonable amount of time. If this is the case, an alternative that you may want to examine is professional assistance from a remodeling expert.

An added benefit to remodeling the kitchen in you home is that the value of your home could increase; however, the keyword was “could.” A home will only increase in value if the remodeling job was a success. Any remodeling job that looks unattractive is not likely to increase the value of a home. In fact, the value of the home may even decrease a slight amount, but, possibly, enough to notice. This means that if you are planning on remodeling your own kitchen, you will want to make sure that you do it right. If you do not have any home improvement experience, it may be a good idea to seek professional assistance or at least take a kitchen remodeling course.

Another pro or disadvantage to kitchen remodeling is the fact that it can be unsafe. This con only applies to those who are interested in doing their own kitchen remodeling. One of the reasons why professional remodelers are able to get the job done quicker is because they often have an immeasurable amount of experience with what they are doing. One mistake that many homeowners make, when remodeling their own kitchen, is believing that they can have their kitchen remodeled in the same amount of time as a professional. Unfortunately, this often leads to hurrying; hurrying that could not only affect your work, but hurrying that could also put yourself in danger. Whether you are making yourself a new kitchen counter, replacing your kitchen cabinets, or replacing the lights in your kitchen, kitchen remodeling can be dangerous. That is why it is important that you take your time.

Although there are a number of kitchen remodeling cons, it is also important to note that there are also a number of pros. When it comes to pros and cons, you need to compare the two and decide which could offer you the most benefits. Doing so may help you decide whether or not it would be a good idea for you remodel your kitchen.

Vacuums the value of the wet vac

Vacuum cleaners were a wonderful invention, one that continually make house cleaning slightly less of the awful chore it is. With dust and debris, crumbs and spills dealt with quickly and easily, we can spend less time completing those tiresome jobs and more time having fun. We’re even free to make a mess as we go about our lives, because we know that clean up won’t take long. But what’s that – a liquid spill? Now that’s a whole other thing!

When someone spills milk or soda on the floor, it’s time to rummage for a cloth somewhere. And what happens when you make a spill on the carpet? Well, that’s even more complicated, as you race to clean up before the liquid settles in. So much for that fun we were supposed to be having. But if you have a wet vacuum cleaner to hand, then cleaning up that spill won’t take long at all. Simply plug it in, and clean, and then you’re on your way again.

There was a time when the wet vac was strictly for use in the workroom only – the characteristic shrill noise it made when cleaning didn’t really make you want to use it anywhere else! While it remains a useful garage tool, perfect for cleaning up those work-related messes, technological developments have helped make the wet vac perfect for your home use too.

There are now a great variety of vacuum cleaners available that allow you to clean either wet or dry messes in an instant. House cleaning can be a wearisome chore, so this combination of cleaning abilities helps you get the job done just that little bit faster. And the incorporation of a number of useful features makes using your wet vacuum easier than ever before.

Won’t the vacuum container fall over when it gets too full of liquid? Most wet vacuums are designed with this in mind, and are set upon wider wheels than its dry-clean only counterparts. Don’t worry about having to check the container to ensure it doesn’t overflow either – many wet vacuums have built in safety devices that will switch the motor off automatically once the container is full.

It seems those wet vacuum manufacturers have thought of everything! So if cleaning house is not your favorite way to spend your free time, a wet vac might just be the choice for you. Getting two things done at once – what’s not to like?

Bruce hardwood flooring buy from the largest hardwood company in the world

Installing Bruce hardwood flooring on the floors of your home is one of the best investments that you can ever make. It will add to the ambiance of any room and increase the value of your home if you ever want to sell. Each grade of wood used in Bruce hardwood carries a warranty all its own. Choose from three grades of hardwood – Good, Better and Best – to have hardwood floors with knots and character. The Best grade in Bruce hardwood flooring is the most expensive, but it also has the best quality wood and the best warranty.

Even with Bruce hardwood flooring, you will see variations in the wood in each plank. This is what will give your hardwood floors the unique appearance that you want to achieve. This variation exists in all qualities of Bruce hardwood floors because no two boards are the same. You do have to be careful even with hardwood even though it is solid. If you place furniture with sharp edges on the flooring it will dent the hardwood. Bruce wood flooring also goes through a natural aging process so if you have an area covered with a rug, when you move it the floor underneath will be lighter in color. It is recommended that you do move rugs from time to time to prevent this discoloration from occurring.

Sometimes, people who have installed Bruce wood flooring in their homes hear popping sounds when they walk across the floors. This is not defect in the Bruce hardwood flooring and is perfectly natural, so there is no cause for alarm. All hardwood goes through a process called patina and it may be caused by an uneven subfloor under the Bruce hardwood floors. If you glue the hardwood planks in place, you do have to make sure that you use the trowels properly when applying the adhesive so that you have a perfectly uniform surface for the hardwood floors.

Although it is not recommended, you can have Bruce hardwood flooring in the bathroom of your home. This is because hardwood is not conducive to areas of the home where there is excessive moisture. The choice to use unfinished or prefinished Bruce wood flooring is a matter of personal taste. It depends on how much work you want to do to finish the floor yourself or how much time you want to spend on maintenance of the Bruce hardwood floors. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, so you can ask the Bruce experts for advice when you are selecting your hardwood flooring. Prefinished hardwood does have more advantages, such as longer finish warranties, uniform stain application in a factory setting and it is easier to keep clean.

If you want to install Bruce hardwood flooring in areas where there will be lots of traffic, the Dura Lustre Plus finish will allow you to do this without any worries. Bruce offers commercial finishes for its hardwood floors, but it doesn’t recommend using mats in doorways or in front of the kitchen sink. Bruce does not recommend that you wax Bruce wood floorings. To keep the natural shine of Bruce hardwood flooring all you have to do is wash it up with a water based cleaner for hardwood floors and give it an occasional buffing.

The work glove a forgotten safety tool

Today, construction and industrial development is a way of life for a majority of the world’s population. Safety measures are continually improving for construction and industrial workers. One of the most important developments in safety equipment for these workers is job-specific work gloves.

Take a look at a few of the many types of gloves available for various industries:

Disposable Gloves – Available in many sizes and thicknesses, these gloves are typically found in the food service and medical industry. Polyethylene and vinyl gloves are commonly used in food service industries, offering comfort and breathe-ability in general purpose applications, such as food processing. Latex gloves are typically found in the medical industry, offering protection against chemical processing and the handling of acids and caustics. Disposable gloves are also used in industries requiring metal treatment, paint and varnish manufacturing, petrochemical and oil refining, the handling of rough castings and steel bars, the use of electronics, light assembly, inspection and quality control.

Heavy Utility Gloves – With a synthetic leather palm and reinforced thumbs and fingertips, these gloves are durable and comfortable. They can also be used in a variety of industries including light demolition, landscaping, and material handling. Heavy Utility Gloves are also great for any job requiring heavy machine operation.

Cold Condition & Waterproof Gloves – These gloves come in different sizes and styles to fit different needs. They keep hands warm and dry in inclement weather conditions. Cold Condition Gloves are perfect for the ocean import and export industries as well as winter resort work, and airport trades. As an added bonus, they are among the best gloves for recreational skiing and snowboarding.

Leather Welding Gloves – Welding gloves are used in welding and heat applications along with any other application requiring heat, flame, or spark protection. The first step in choosing the proper welding glove is learning the different types of heat:

Radiant Heat is generated by the sun or any source of fire.

Ambient Heat is the surrounding atmospheric temperature.

Conduct Heat is the direct contact of a hot surface.

The next step is to consider the weight of materials being handled, the contact temperature, and the time of exposure to the heat. It is important to choose a welding glove that fits the needs of all the variables in consideration.

Cut Resistant Gloves – The name says it all. A lot of industries require the use of sharp objects, and these gloves are perfect for all of them. High performance strings provide cut and abrasion resistance, and high performance yarns further protect the hands when working with sharp objects. Various material weights provide longer durability and additional dexterity where needed. Some styles are dipped or coated with a polymer to provide a better grip and increase durability. Common uses include, but are not limited to, food preparation, glass and metal handling, automotive work, and electronic work.

There are many more types and styles of gloves available. Though the most important safety tool you can have is knowledge, job-specific gloves are the key to hand protection. Always choose a glove that fits your hands well and provides the best protection for the job at hand.

Bedding buying guide

Bedding is an important home and furnishing article and there are different factors that deserve consideration like durability and comfort level. You get designer bedding items like covers, sets, pillows and cushions that allow supreme comfort while adding a touch of class and sophistication to any bedroom area. You can say, you get what you burn your pocket for, as quality is an important factor for deciding on the value of a bedding collection. The best rule of thumb remains the old clichй, "You get what you pay for". This buying guide aims to inform you on different aspects of bedding in terms of quality and technicalities that will help you determine the best thing within your budget. Some factors you don’t want to miss on,

Thread-Count : The thread count in a fabric allows you to determine its quality. For sheets, it ranges anywhere between 80 to 12000 TC. A TC ranging between 180-to-500 thread-counts is considered good and often found in most of the stores. However, quality also depends on other technical factors and not just the thread count. So you should not be surprised to find higher count sheets and lower count sheets to have a similar price tag.

Fabric : High count cotton with satin finish is a popular bedding material. It is important to determine the exact percentage of cotton used in the fabric. Sometimes, you may end up buying labeled sheets with cotton tags but actually use little of cotton percentage and in combination of unnatural or synthetic fiber.

Mattress : One of the most important bedding item, mattresses come in two types—spring mattress and regular foam mattress. While regular high-density foam mattress is good, you get highly advanced mattresses that have layers of high density foam to provide complete body support. Spring mattresses are relatively expensive and more durable.

Pocket : Carefully measure your mattresses pocket depth. To measure, start from the highest point on the mattress to the bottom edge. Do not forget to include the mattress pad and/or any additional bedding to be used beneath your sheets. Once you have checked the pocket depth of your sheets for adequate thickness of your mattress, it will surely enhance the comfort level of your fitted sheet adding to the bedding.

Fitted sheets: Fitted sheets come with elastic anchor bands at both the corner pockets and around the boundary line of the fitted sheet. This feature is what makes a fitting sheet stay intact no matter what the mattress size. It also allows a uniform feel and smooth sleeping surface for a great night sleep.

Pilling : When any bedding fabric gathers pills or groups of short or broken fibers on its surface resulting in tangling of the fabric due to the tangling resulting in small balls making. the surface uneven. It is one of the most common problem and the following laundering tips can fix up the problem like nothing else,

To avoid and minimize piling,

• While washing in machine, it is advisable to select less shake ups and opt for short wash cycles

• Follow the care instructions and avoid washing with other clothing articles, especially towels etc.

• During machine wash, be sure not to over dry. Remove clothes from the dryer as soon as possible

Cushions and pillows : Cushions and pillows are not just great for comfort, but also add a fresh touch of dйcor. Any bed would look incomplete without these beauties done with embellishment and embroidery work that enhances the beauty and aesthetics of your bed and room by many folds. The idea is to choose as many complimenting and contrasting colors that go well with your bedroom theme. You could match up with the bed covers, or opt for a neutral cover and do the cushions in great colors, prints, work and embroidery.

Go with your personal style when choosing bedding items. But make sure that the fabric is comfortable, the cushions are not overly decorative or studded, and that the theme harmonizes with the entire thing.

How to waterproof a canvas

There are times that we can never curb the forces of nature. This just goes to show that nature is, indeed, powerful and can destroy anything and everything. So, the only way we can do is to provide protection from the raging effects of nature.

One way to do this is through waterproofing. Waterproofing has been a great technique in preventing the penetration of water to any material.

Whenever you waterproof a material, you apply a certain waterproof matter that is designed to provide utmost protection against the imminent effect of water. This, in turn, serves as a wall between the material and water.

There are many types of waterproofing. One of them is canvas waterproofing. This method is used particularly on materials made of canvas.

In most instances, the typical type of cotton canvas is already a waterproof material. Therefore, it does not need any waterproofing. Its fibers puff up whenever they are exposed to water, thus, it closes the knits of the canvas.

However, because of the canvas’ vulnerability to mildew and “bird droppings,” it is still subjected to canvas waterproofing. This is because canvas waterproofing does not only protect the canvas from water alone but also from other substances that can cause damage on the item.

So, for those who want to know about canvas waterproofing, here are some pointers you need to know:

1. Do not use silicone-based canvas waterproofing.

Never attempt to use silicone-based canvas waterproofing on acrylic canvas. Silicone clashes with the original application.

Normally, acrylic canvas primarily contains a canvas waterproofing chemical known as fluorocarbon, which in turn, repels the silicone material when applied. If this happens, it will result into an erratic treatment. Silicon can also eliminate the “stain-resistance” substance in the acrylic canvas.

2. Use a product with fluoropolymer.

When doing canvas waterproofing, it is best that you use a fluoropolymer-based substance. This type of canvas waterproofing is compatible with the acrylic canvas. Hence, it will result into a more durable and sturdy acrylic canvas.

3. Use a waterproof material that contains petroleum.

Petroleum-based materials have long been proven to be effective when doing a canvas waterproofing. They are very compatible with acrylic canvas. Petroleum-based substances work best in canvas waterproofing than those substances that are water-based.

The best way to identify a petroleum-based substances to be used in canvas waterproofing is to through its pungent smell.

4. When performing canvas waterproofing, do it outdoors.

It is best that you do canvas waterproofing outside the house because of the substance’s very strong odor. You might get suffocated once you do it inside the house. Therefore, it is best that you do canvas waterproofing where there is proper ventilation.

Besides, these strong substances used in canvas waterproofing can also damage your furniture made of plastics. So, it is a must that you take extra care when doing canvas waterproofing.

5. Use protective covers for sensitive furniture.

If you will do a canvas waterproofing on a canvas dodger, it is best that you protect your plastic furniture first before you start with the process. You can do this by placing foil over the plastic materials.

6. Do a spot test first.

It is best that before you start the process, do a spot test first. This is to know whether the substance used in canvas waterproofing will not discolour your canvas or cause further damage.

7. Remove the canvas from the boat.

It is best that before you start waterproofing, you should first remove the canvas from the boat. This is to ensure that the hard surfaces will not slick. Also, there are waterproofing substances that can cause a damaging reaction against gelcoat.

However, if you find this tedious and very unworkable, try to protect all areas vulnerable to “overspray” instead.

8. Let it dry first.

After waterproofing, let the canvas dry first before reinstalling it. In this manner, the pungent smell will soon be eliminated.

However, experts strongly suggest that after the canvas has been dried, it would be better to apply a second dose of waterproofing. This is to ensure durability of the material. It is still safe to do this and will not affect the fabric’s overall condition.

9. Reapply when necessary.

Repeat the process whenever the canvas is exposed in callous conditions. Though, experts say that after doing a waterproofing, the protection is guaranteed for one year at the least.

So, now that you know how to do canvas waterproofing, you can be assured that your canvas will always stay in top condition. As they say, it is better to prevent damage than to cure it.

Family health - investing in an ionic air purifier

According to the American College of Allergists, polluted indoor air causes or contributes toward Ѕ of all illnesses. For families with two or more children who all have the potential of contracting a variety of illnesses throughout the year, do the math and you'll see how expensive it can be to be exposed to the ever-present contaminants that make themselves at home in your air.

Mold, dust, pollen and other irritants can exist in stagnant air and actually increase in intensity when they're brought in on hair, clothing and other objects that are introduced from the outdoors each day. Even tiny flakes of dried skin can become airborne, unseen to the naked eye, and cause respiratory problems for those who reside in the home. Since the ability to prevent these agents from entering the environment is not within your power, then steps must be taken to remove them before illness develops as a result of their presence in the air that you breathe.

Effects of Indoor Contaminants

In order to eliminate allergens and other contaminants from your home, you'll need to make a solid plan for purifying the air - in other words, you'll need to install an effective filtration system. The best way to accomplish this is by utilizing an Ionic Air Purifier. By integrating one of these systems into your home, you'll be eliminating those agents which adversely impact your health and cause you to suffer from a variety of symptoms, some of which may include:

+ Eye irritations

+ Nose and Throat irritations

+ Headaches

+ Sinus Infections

+ Sneezing

+ Coughing

+ Allergies

+ Asthma

+ Colds, Flu and Viruses

+ Ear infections

+ Respiratory Infections

+ Skin Irritations

+ Nausea

You may naturally assume that these pollutants can be eliminated through the course of regular housecleaning, or even more strenuous cleaning regimens, such as spring or fall cleaning sprees. Unfortunately, that's not the case. No matter how much you apply yourself to housecleaning, these contaminants will remain in the air. In fact, dusting and other forms of cleaning may cause allergens that have come to rest on furniture and carpeting to become airborne, causing adverse reactions to your health.

Various Types and Models of Ionic Air Purifier

While the standard model of Ionic Air Purifier utilizes negative ion generators to charge airborne particles so that they become attracted to the surfaces of furniture and other inanimate objects throughout your home, those which utilize electrostatic precipitators will actually trap the contaminants between metal plates that are housed within the unit, effectively cleaning the air and keeping it free of these irritating agents.

In addition to cleaning the air, these purifiers are often silent and energy efficient, and don't release any chemicals into the air. Another perk is that these systems are filterless, making them ideal for purifying a room or the entire interior of your home. Simply clean the metal plates regularly, and you're all set - without the ongoing cost of filters.

Of course, many pollutants also cause foul odors to be present in the air, such as in the case of cigarette smoke, the musty smell of mold, or simply the stale smell that's a by-product of stagnant air. Purifiers such as these also work to remove such odors, making the air pleasant to smell, as well as to breathe.

While the prices of Ionic Air Purifiers may seem a bit exorbitant in some cases, they can actually be purchased for under $100, depending upon the size of the unit and the competition among various dealers. When you consider the cost of medical bills due to the variety of illnesses that can crop up as the result of contaminated air, these units will pay for themselves in very short order. When viewed from that perspective, it's far more costly not to own a purifier than it is to invest in one.

Benefits of laminate wood flooring

Over the past few years laminate floors have really started to become popular, especially in homes with children. There are a number of reasons for this. One, laminate flooring is less expensive than traditional hardwood flooring. Two, it is very easy to clean and maintain. For couples with children, laminate flooring is generally a much better choice than hardwood.

Most laminate flooring is tongue and groove, meaning there is no glue or nailing, each plank simply locks together. This makes installation a breeze and it also means it will be easier to remove the floor should the need arise. Not all laminate floors are glueless, but it is worth the extra money to save time and effort. Here are some of the more common laminate floor manufacturers: Pergo, Wilsonart, Mannington, Mohawk, Shaw, Quick-Step, Armstrong, and Alloc.

You may ask how the look of laminate flooring compares to that of real hardwood. Good question. Laminate floor manufacturers use high rnd, computerized technology to create realistic wood designs in each plank. The top wear layer is very durable and easy to maintain. Laminate flooring is also impervious to most stains, spills, burns and it is highly scratch resistant.

Care of laminate floors is also easy. Usually all you need is a dry mop or vacuum to keep them looking new. You don't need or want to use soaps, abrasives, polishes, wax, or one step floor cleaners on your laminate. You also want to make sure not to slide furniture across your floor, laminate is tough but a sofa leg will gouge your floor. It doesn't hurt to put furniture pads on the legs of sofas, tables or anything else that could scratch your floor.

As with any wood flooring some maintenance is required, but overall laminate wood flooring is easier to care for and will last longer than most other types of hardwood flooring.

Taking solar into account when designing your home improvements

Using the sun to heat up a home is growing by leaps and bounds in popularity these days. To really save money with solar, the best way is to design your home or improvements with solar in mind.

Taking Solar Into Account When Designing Your Home Improvements

In this case, we are not talking about using active solar panels to heat your home. We are merely talking about orienting your home in a particular way as well as emphasizing certain features. While this may sound odd at first, it is an extremely popular and cost effective energy production method used throughout the world.

To pursue this strategy, you must pay careful attention to how you design your house or improvements. One of the biggest errors made by people is the failure to take in all aspects of home heating and cooling. This can lead to a situation where you are producing far too much solar heat and the house becomes an oven. Get it wrong in the other direction and you don’t have nearly enough heat. Here are the key issues to consider.

The first issue, the site location, is almost always overlooked. Ideally, you want unobstructed sunlight to hit the south side of the home for at least six hours in the middle of the day. Contrary to popular opinion, it doesn’t matter what part of the United States you live in. There is sufficient sun exposure everywhere, although areas heavy with fog and cloud cover may be problematic. Regardless, the home must receive the aforementioned amount of sunlight. If it doesn’t, you are not going to be happy with the results.

The second issue many people miss out on is commonly known as the axis orientation. In the Northern Hemisphere, the south wall of structures will receive the most sun exposure. To efficiently use this energy, your home must be oriented to expose the longest wall of the structure to the south. The more surface area you have facing the sun, the more heat and light you will be able to generate in the home. On the other hand, if you orient a short side to the sun, it is going to produce less heat and be harder to circulate it through the length of the home.

The third issue ties in into axis orientation. To produce heat, you must have a vast majority of the windows on the south side of the home. Unless you are using a solar capture wall, it makes little sense to orient your home correctly without letting the sunlight in. Conversely, you need minimize windows on the north side of the home or at least use super energy efficient windows to keep heat from escaping. You don’t want to create a wind tunnel from the south to north side of the structure as air temperatures try to balance out!

You may have some doubts about how much heat a properly planned structure will produce. Hyperbole aside, your home will cook. The sun is incredibly powerful. Imagine sitting in your car on a sunny day with the windows rolled up and no air conditioning. The same thing will happen with your home.

To combat excessive heat, you should include some mechanism for reducing the amount of sun coming into the home. The easiest answer is to put curtains or some such thing on the interior, but it doesn’t always work for large bay windows. To resolve this problem, you should put some type of a retractable overhang on the exterior of the home. You can install the roller under the lip of the roof. They don’t look nearly as cheesy as they used to and you’ll be happy you did so when summer rolls around.

Taking advantage of the sun for heating is not particularly complicated. If you keep the above issues in mind, you’ll be able to smile when your neighbors complain about their utility bills.

Saving energy with electronics

According to the buzz, electronics are part of an energy-savings solution. Electronics increase control over home heating, cooling and lighting systems and make it possible to telework and to access information and entertainment from home-saving you money and gas and protecting the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

What does the industry recommend you do to help save energy for America and maybe some money for yourself? Here are some hints:

• Look for the Energy Star label. It can help you identify products that use less energy. Check out energystar. gov for a searchable database of Energy Star products.

• Go digital with your thermostat. Home heating and cooling systems use a significant amount of energy. Most digital thermostats quickly pay for themselves in energy savings. Programmable thermostats save energy while you're away or asleep by adjusting temperature settings.

• Unplug mobile phone or PDA chargers when batteries are fully charged or when the chargers are not in use.

• Be power-wise with your PC. Most personal computers have power management features that control energy use.

• Check owners' manuals to make sure you're taking full advantage of any energy-conservation capabilities of your electronics.

• Plug electronics, such as TVs, DVD players and audio systems, into power strips, and turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use, especially for long periods of time. Just be sure to read the manual first to make sure you won't affect the product (for example, TVs that need to remain plugged in so that they can download program guides).

• Investigate home networking and automation products and services that let you control heating, lighting and cooling from a central location in the home.

• When in the market for home office products, consider a multifunction device, which combines printing, copying, scanning and faxing.

• Save fuel by shopping and banking from home on your computer.

• Ask your employer about working from home or a satellite business location to cut your commute.
